KLNFR is planned for degazettement by the Selangor government (see yesterday’s posting). To see what would be lost, my friend, Mike H.N. Chong, and I did bird and butterfly (see yesterday’s posting) surveys of KLNFR. If there are healthy bird and butterfly diversity then the forest has a healthy biodiversity generally.

Because of time constraint this survey was done only over two days in mid February 2020.

A total of 50 bird species from 25 families were recorded. From the total of 50 bird species, 46 species were residents and four species were migrants. Three species were with resident/migrant status.

Of note are four bird species that are listed as “Near Threatened” under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Black-bellied Malkoha Phaenicophaeus diardi, Blue-rumped Parrot Psittinus cyanurus, Lesser Green Leafbird Chloropsis cyanopogon and Green Iora Aegithina viridissima. This fact is not surprising given that they are all principally lowland forest birds, the most threatened class of birds since this forest habitat is the most threatened of forests. From the 50 bird species recorded in the 2-day surveys, bird diversity appears to be moderately high, given the short survey period.

Some of the birds are shown below (not all photographed in KLNFR). Caption: Common English name, scientific name, Malay name (from *Rosli Omar 2018 or #A. Jeyarajasingam and A. Pearson 2012).

Orange-backed Woodpecker, Reinwardtipicus validus. Belatok Ranum
Ashy Tailorbird, Orthotomus ruficeps. Perenjak Kelabu

A juvenile Changeable Hawk Eagle was heard actively calling in the survey area, suggesting this species is breeding here. An adult of the same species was observed as well.

A longer survey of the area is needed for larger forest and threatened bird species to be recorded, in efforts to documents the full bird diversity of KLNFR. This would greatly assist in the efforts to conserve and save KLNFR from being totally cleared along with its biodiversity. Still, there is a healthy diversity of 50 bird species It is likely with more extensive surveys that other species could be added to the list.
