Abstract

This paper presents a method to create Malay (Bahasa Melayu) names for the birds of Peninsular Malaysia in a systematic way, that is, for creating a Malay names Checklist of birds, a first for Peninsula birds. And that, from the name, a species relationship as to family or genus or related genera, if any, to other species can be known. The Checklist is based on the scientific and English names from the Checklist of the Birds of Malaysia (Puan et al. 2021), taking only the Peninsula birds. Some birds already have Malay names, official ones from the Wildlife Conservation (amendment of schedule order 2012) Act (WCA), and others from the Malaysian Biodiversity Information System (MyBIS). We try to follow WCA’s names unless they do not fit our naming method, or for other reasons. Or, some may already be widely accepted names. These we may have to accept as exceptions to our naming method.

KEYWORDS

Bird Checklist Peninsular Malaysia. Birds’ Malay names. Systematic Malay naming. Species family relationship.

Introduction

The scientific and English names Checklist of the birds of Peninsular Malaysia follow that of Puan et al. (2021). The aim here is to create a Malay names checklist based on these two checklists guided by the already available Malay names, if they are available. Some Malay names are available from the Wildlife Conservation (amendment of schedule order 2012) Act published by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC 2012). Some are also available from the website of the Malaysian Biodiversity Information System (MyBIS). Malay names are available for some species but not all. And even if they exist the names may not be systematically created. For example, Tiong. It is used for the family of mynas and starlings of the family Sturnidae. But it also used for Tiong Air of the water birds’ family, Rallidae. What we would like to see from the Malay names is that species that are related to others are immediately seen if there is such a relationship.

Objectives of the Malay naming

The objectives of the naming are twofold:

  1. To have a Malay names checklist for all the birds of Peninsular Malaysia created in a systematic way.
  2. To show the relatedness between a species and others if there is a relationship. For example, from the name, species that belong to the same family may be identified, or from the same genus or related genera.

With these objectives in mind, there are two ways to create the Malay names:

  1. <Family name><Group name><Specific name>
  2. <Group name><Subgroup name><Specific name>

Method 1 is chosen when there is already a Malay family name for the scientific family, or one can be easily named. For example, the family of nightjars, Caprimulgidae, has the Malay family name of (Burung) Tukang. For the treeswift family of Hemiprocnidae, a Malay family name of Lelayangjambul was created.

Method 2 is chosen when there are two or more ‘group names’ already named for a family. For example, the family Rallidae has three distinct groups, Sintar (crakes, rail, waterhen), Ayam-ayam (watercock), and Pangling (swamphen, moorhen, coot). Thus, each forms a group name. The Subgroup name is used if there are subgroups within the Group that are distinctive.

The Specific name for both methods is something that specifies the species, either some feature or distribution or type locality (TL, where the formally described specimen, called the Type Specimen, was taken).

Notes on the Malay naming

General form of the naming methods. Methods 1 and 2 show that there are a maximum of three components to each name. In Method 2, for certain cases, we need only one component to uniquely name a species.  For example, the case of the Great Argus, Argusianus argus (family: Phasianidae), the Malay name is Kuang-raya. The hyphen indicates that the two words are an item. More on the hyphen below. Its cousin, that lives in the mountains, Malaysian Crested Argus, Rheinardia nigrescens, is Kuang-raya Gunung. If we want, we could name the Great Argus as Kuang-raya Pamah to indicate that it is the argus of the lowlands (although its habitat reaches some 900m elevation). But naming it just as Kuang-raya renders it as a kind of the ‘true’ or default Kuang-raya.

Another example, Merak for Green Peafowl, Pavo muticus. Since it is the only Peafowl species in Peninsular Malaysia (locally extinct), we do not need the specify the ‘Green’ feature.

Similarly with Method 1. For family Phaethontidae, the Tropicbirds, there is only one species here, the White-tailed Tropicbird. This is adapted as Burungtropik without the need to specify the ‘White-tailed’ feature.

Non-use of Common but use of Rare. We do not use the ‘common’ in English names. This because, it may be common for its type locality, or may no longer be common, or not common in the future. For example, Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, which is Pekaka Cit-cit. This kingfisher, a migrant, is certainly not common here. But we do use, occasionally, the opposite case, ‘rare’, taken as Jarang, for example, the rare Brown-backed Flowerpecker, Dicaeum everetti, Sepahputeri Jarang. It is unlikely, although possible, that a rare species would turn out to be common in the future.

Use and non-use of the hyphen. As noted above, one use of the hyphen is

  1. to indicate that two or more words are an item. This is useful to keep to the convention of a maximum of three components to a name, or
  2. to indicate that two words form a group name. For example, the above Kuang-raya. It cannot be Kuang Raya since Kuang is a group name of the Peacock-pheasants, Malayan (Kuang Merak) and Mountain (Kuang Cermin).

But for naming family names, we do not use the hyphen. As in the above Burungtropik, or Dendanglaut for the family Sulidae (gannets and bobbies). It is adapted from Dendang Laut for the Brown Bobby, Sula leucogaster. The two words are combined because Dendang is used for the family Oriolidae, the Orioles.

Naming is guided by names already in used. We do not simply create new names. If a species already has a name and it conforms to either Method 1 or 2 then it is used, possibly with some modification. For example, the above Kuang-raya. The original is Kuang Raya but as explained, it has to be modified to Kuang-raya. Or the above Dendang Laut.

Names after people are not used. Following the American Ornithological Society’s decision (AOS 2023)  to change bird names named after people we have decided not to use human names in our Malay naming.

A Checklist of Malay names for Peninsular Malaysian birds has been created, that is, every species has been given a Malay name, a first for Peninsular Malaysian birds. This alongside scientific and English names of 719 species that are based on Puan et al. (2021).

Discussion

A species name should be informative

Family name. Our naming objectives are to name species in a systematic way and that a name gives information as to its relationship (family, genus, or related genera) to others, if any. Consider the WCA-listed Tiong Air (Common Moorhen), mentioned in the Introduction, of family Rallidae. But all other Tiongs are of family Sturnidae. We recommend the name Pangling Kecil since it looks like Pangling (Indochinese Swamphen) and Pangling Hitam (Common Coot), both of the same family Rallidae (Kecil because it is the smallest of the three).

A fondness for Batu. In the WCA, there are 17 species named with Batu (stone) in them, such as Camar Batu (Bridled Tern), Sualo Batu (House Swallow), and Tiong Batu (Oriental Dollarbird). We cannot see the association between the named species with stones. Let’s look in detail at those named Murai Batu:

1. Rimba Murai Batu, Scaly Thrush, Zoothera dauma. Family: Urdidae

2. Murai Batu Tanah, Chestnut-capped Thrush, Geokichla interpres. Family Urdidae

3. Murai Batu, White-rumped Shama, Kittacincla malabarica. Family Muscicapidae

4. Murai Batu Rengkong Putih. White-throated Rock-thrush, Monticola gularis. Family Muscicapidae

5. Murai Batu Tarung. Eastern Blue Rock-thrush. Monticola philippensis. Family: Muscicapidae

6. Murai Batu Pejal. Japanese Stonechat, Saxicola stejnegeri. Family: Muscicapidae

It is obvious that 1 and 2, even though both are thrushes, from the same family, are formed differently. And 2 is from a differently family from 3 to 6 even though all are head-named Murai Batu. And 3 to 6, even though of different groups (Shama, Rock-thrush, Stonechat) are all head-named Murai Batu. That is, the names are not informative.

We recommend the following names instead:

1. Seriawan Sisik (Seriawan, for the Thrush family)

2. Seriawan Ubun-perang

3. Murai-rimba Besar (Murai-rimba, for Shama. Habitat is forests. The other Murai-rimba is smaller)

4. Murai-batu Merah (Murai-batu, for Rock-thrush. Red plumage)

5. Murai-batu Biru (Blue plumage)

6. Murai-sawah (Murai-sawah, for Stonechat. Habitat is padi fields, and the only Stonechat here)

The rest of the Batu-related names and their recommended names, if any, can be seen in the Checklist.

Names that are not nice – Sampah. Another fondness, though not to the extent of Batu, is to name species with Sampah i.e., rubbish. There are six altogether in WCA. Again, we cannot see the association between rubbish and the named species. Let’s look at three of the six.

1.Sewah Sampah, Horsfield’s Bronze-cuckoo. Chalcites basilis. Family: Cuculidae

2.Merbah Sampah, Grey-cheeked Bulbul, Alophoixus tephrogenys. Family: Pycnonotidae

3.Sambar Sampah, Ferruginous Flycatcher, Muscicapa ferruginea. Family: Muscicapidae

We recommend instead these:

1.Sewah Australia (Breeds in Australia)

2.Merbah Bukit (Habitat is the submontane slopes)

3.Sambar-coklat Perang (Sambar-coklat, for genus Muscicapa, the brown flycatchers)

The other three species can be seen in the Checklist.

Group names to the specific or general?  Generally, specific group names provide more information. Consider the family Accipitridae, that of Hawks and Eagles/Lang and Hereng. There are various groups within, recognisable physically and behaviourally. Some examples, with WCA’s Malay names, are:

1. Hawk-eagle. Eg, Mountain Hawk-eagle. Lang Gunung, Nisaetus nipalensis.

2. Marsh-harrier. Eg, Western Marsh-harrier, Lang Barat, Circus aeruginosus.

3. Goshawk. Eg, Crested Goshawk. Lang Sika, Accipiter trivirgatus.

4. Sparrowhawk. Eg, Japanese Sparrowhawk. Lang Sawah, Accipiter gularis.

5. Eagle. Eg, Steppe Eagle, Helang Padang. Aquila nipalensis.

WCA does not distinguish between these groups. All are named by the general Lang. Thus, we don’t know that 3 and 4 are closely related. This is not informative. We recommend the following:

1. Lang-rajawali Gunung  (Rajawali is falconet, to reflect the smaller sizes of hawk-eagles)

2. Lang-sawah Barat  (Padi fields, the main hunting habitat of harriers)

3. Lang-sewah Sika  (Sewah/cuckoo, for its small size. Not sure what Sika is)

4. Lang-sewah Jepun (Sawah/padi fields, not its habitat – Wells)

5. Lang Padang  (Eagles are ‘True’ or default Lang, with non-hyphenated name. Helang changed to Lang)

Other specific group names for Accipitridae (and other families) can be seen in the Checklist.

Conclusion

There are 719 species of birds in Peninsular Malaysia in the Checklist compiled from Puan et al. (2021) divided into 97 families. Roughly 60 percent of families have a single Malay family name and thus uses Method 1 to create the Malay species names. The rest have two or more group names and thus use Method 2.

Our naming methods call for consistency in naming. That is, if Method 1 is used then every species from the same family would have the same head-name for the family. Similarly, by Method 2, every species from the same group would have the same head-name. And if two species are of the same genus then this is reflected in the same head-name for both. Unless, of course, these names are exceptions to the rule. For example, we have recommended for the Peacock-pheasants the group name/head-name Kuang. Then for the two Peacock-pheasants, the Malay and the Mountain (Polyplectron malacense and P. inopinatum respectively) they are Kuang Merak and Kuang Cermin (the latter is the same as WCA’s). But the former may not be accepted officially or by the public, preferring WCA’s Merak Pongsu. If so, we just have to accept this as an exception to our naming methods.

Names should be informative. Group names, reflecting groups that are physically and behaviourally different within a family should be used to reflect the differences. And try to avoid names that do not provide association between them and the birds’ physiology and behaviour. For example, the favourite  Batu. And especially avoid ugly names like Sampah (rubbish) especially when there is no association between the name and the bird.
